Sexotisch

Discussing racism through the lens of porn categories - that was the idea Qian van Binsbergen presented for this documentary series. When asked to explore this topic with her and Trudi Janssens, I couldn't refuse.

The result is Sexotic, a three-part program examining sexual racism. Through expert insights, we trace an unconventional path from colonial history and pseudoscientific biology to modern-day manifestations. Where exactly does fetishization end and racism begin?

This documentary confronts uncomfortable truths while dismantling harmful assumptions.

Racisme bespreken aan de hand van porno categorieën, dat was het idee waarmee Qian van Binsbergen deze documentaireserie bij mij neerlegde. Of ik dat samen met haar en Trudi Janssens wilde gaan onderzoeken. Daar kon ik geen nee tegen zeggen.

Het resultaat: Sexotisch, een driedelig programma over seksueel racisme. Aan de hand van diverse wetenschappers lopen we op onconventionele manier van de (koloniale) geschiedenis, via de (pseudo) biologie naar de doorwerking hiervan in het heden. Want waar stopt een fetish en wanneer begint racisme?

In de serie stellen we niet alleen dingen aan de kaak, maar halen we ook aannames onderuit.

De Afhaalchinees/Official Selection, NFF Debuutcompetitie 2024

De Afhaalchinees was part of the Official Selection of the NFF Debuutcompetitie 2024. With this selection, the series was included in the debut competition of the Netherlands Film Festival, which showcases work by debuting makers.

The four-part documentary series explores the world of intercountry adoption. For this production, I was involved in selecting and pre-interviewing experts, and in coaching maker and protagonist Qian van Binsbergen.

The editorial team consisted of Larissa Biemond, Robin Luyckx, Miriam Rossewij and Li Sha Tan. Camera work was by Marco Hogenboom, Tjerk Hermsen and Vincent Wilkie.

The series was made for Omroep ZWART, at PnP Media.

Officiële selectie, NFF Debuutcompetitie 2024

De Afhaalchinees maakte deel uit van de Official Selection van de NFF Debuutcompetitie 2024. Met die selectie kreeg de serie een plek in de debuutcompetitie van het Nederlands Film Festival, waarin werk van debuterende makers wordt uitgelicht.

De vierdelige documentaireserie duikt in de wonderlijke wereld van interlandelijke adoptie. Voor deze productie hield ik mij onder meer bezig met het selecteren en voorspreken van deskundigen en met het coachen van maker en protagonist Qian van Binsbergen.

De redactie bestond uit Larissa Biemond, Robin Luyckx, Miriam Rossewij en Li Sha Tan. De camera was in handen van Marco Hogenboom, Tjerk Hermsen en Vincent Wilkie.

De serie werd gemaakt voor Omroep ZWART, bij PnP Media.

De Afhaalchinees/Nominated for the Nipkow 2024 Award

De Afhaalchinees (Chinese Takeaway), a Dutch documentary series I contributed to, received a nomination for the Zilveren Nipkowschijf, one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious television awards. The jury of thirteen leading Dutch television critics described the series as “both shocking and hilarious, deeply personal, informative and newsworthy.”

The four-part documentary series explores the complexities of intercountry adoption in the Netherlands. My work included selecting and pre-interviewing experts, as well as coaching maker and protagonist Qian van Binsbergen. The series was made for Omroep ZWART, within the Dutch public broadcasting system.

Beyond the nomination, the series also had social impact. In April 2024, the Dutch House of Representatives voted in favour of gradually ending intercountry adoption, amid a broader public debate to which the documentary contributed.

De jury van dertien toonaangevende televisiecritici omschreef de serie als “schokkend en hilarisch, zeer persoonlijk, informatief en nieuwswaardig”.
