Discussing racism through the lens of porn categories - that was the idea Kelly-Qian presented for this documentary series. When asked to explore this topic with her and Trudi Janssens, I couldn't refuse.

The result is Sexotic, a three-part program examining sexual racism. Through expert insights, we trace an unconventional path from colonial history and pseudoscientific biology to modern-day manifestations. Where exactly does fetishization end and racism begin?

This documentary confronts uncomfortable truths while dismantling harmful assumptions.

Racisme bespreken aan de hand van porno categorieën, dat was het idee waarmee Kelly-Qian deze documentaireserie bij mij neerlegde. Of ik dat samen met haar en Trudi Janssens wilde gaan onderzoeken. Daar kon ik geen nee tegen zeggen.

Het resultaat: 'Sexotisch', een driedelig programma over seksueel racisme. Aan de hand van diverse wetenschappers lopen we op onconventionele manier van de (koloniale) geschiedenis, via de (pseudo) biologie naar de doorwerking hiervan in het heden. Want waar stop een fetish en wanneer begint racisme?

In de serie stellen we niet alleen dingen aan de kaak, maar halen we ook aannames onderuit.

De Afhaalchinees

"De Afhaalchinees" (Chinese Takeaway), a Dutch TV documentary series I contributed to, has been awarded a Nipkow nomination – one of the most prestigious television awards in the Netherlands, comparable to an Emmy. The nomination was decided by a jury of thirteen leading Dutch TV critics, who praised the series as "both shocking and hilarious, deeply personal yet informative and newsworthy."

The four-part documentary (4×45 minutes) explores the complexities of international adoption in the Netherlands. My role included selecting and pre-interviewing experts, as well as coaching the creator and protagonist, Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen. The series was produced by Omroep Zwart, part of the Dutch Public Broadcasting system (NPO).

Beyond the Nipkow nomination, the documentary sparked tangible impact: in April 2024, the Dutch House of Representatives voted to gradually abolish international adoption following increased public debate influenced by the series.

De Afhaalchinees, een documentaireserie waaraan ik heb meegewerkt, is genomineerd voor een Nipkow – een van de belangrijkste tv-prijzen van Nederland. De jury van dertien toonaangevende televisiecritici omschreef de serie als "schokkend, hilarisch, zeer persoonlijk, informatief en nieuwswaardig".

De vierdelige documentaire duikt in de wereld van interlandelijke adoptie. Mijn taken omvatten het selecteren en voorspreken van deskundigen, en het coachen van maker en protagonist Kelly-Qian van Binsbergen. De serie werd uitgezonden door Omroep Zwart (publieke omroep/NPO).

Naast de Nipkow-nominatie had de serie een maatschappelijk effect: in april 2024 stemde de Tweede Kamer voor het geleidelijk afschaffen van interlandelijke adoptie, mede dankzij de discussie die de documentaire aanwakkerde.
