In this story, we travel with Step Vaessen through parts of Amsterdam as she discusses the controversy surrounding the Maccabi riots in the Netherlands in November 2024. We join her at the locations where it happened: Amsterdam Central Station, the metro station and City Hall.
After CCTV footage showing violent behavior by Israeli hooligans toward Muslim women was found to have been overwritten, Dutch prosecutors dropped the case in June 2025. The decision raised concerns among people with roots in the MENA region, who say the loss of evidence undermines their trust in Dutch institutions and their sense of safety.

Sexotic is a three-part documentary about sexual racism, made in collaboration with Kelly-Qian and Trudi Janssens. Through expert insights, we trace an unconventional path from colonial history and pseudoscientific biology to modern-day manifestations. Where exactly does fetishization end and racism begin?
This documentary confronts uncomfortable truths while dismantling harmful assumptions.

Sexotisch is een driedelig programma over seksueel racisme, gemaakt samen met Kelly-Qian en Trudi Janssens. Aan de hand van diverse wetenschappers lopen we op onconventionele manier van de (koloniale) geschiedenis, via de (pseudo) biologie naar de doorwerking hiervan in het heden. Want waar stopt een fetish en wanneer begint racisme?
De serie schuurt, stelt vragen, en haalt hardnekkige aannames onderuit. Niet om te choqueren, maar om bloot te leggen wat vaak onbesproken blijft.

Sometimes, an idea becomes a report. And occasionally, those reports grow into a series. Together with Step Vaessen, Denis Slepov, and Remco Kikkert, I produced a three-part series for Al Jazeera English about migrant workers in Europe.
This series explores the complex and often paradoxical relationship between Europe and its migrant labour force. Told in three episodes, it looks at the challenges and dilemmas migrant workers face across the continent.
The first episode focuses on the situation in the Netherlands, the second takes us to Romania, and the third is set in Greece.

Soms groeit een idee uit tot een reportage. En soms vormen die reportages een serie. Samen met Step Vaessen, Denis Slepov en Remco Kikkert maakte ik voor Al Jazeera English een drie-luik over arbeidsmigranten in Europa.
De serie onderzoekt de complexe en vaak tegenstrijdige relatie tussen Europa en zijn arbeidsmigranten. In drie afleveringen geeft ze een beeld van de uitdagingen en dilemma’s waarmee deze migranten op dit continent te maken hebben.
De eerste aflevering richt zich op de situatie in Nederland, de tweede neemt de kijker mee naar Roemenië, en de derde speelt zich af in Griekenland.
Met het idee van een contradictio in terminis - wordt afhaalchinees ooit thuis bezorgd? - werd ik verleid om een groot deel van 2024 en een klein deel van 2025 bij te dragen aan De Afhaalchinees – Thuisbezorgd. Een documentaireserie uit de gedachtenkoker van Kelly-Qian.
Een nieuwe achtbaan aan gedachten, ideeën en stellingnames over interlandelijke adoptie. In een nauwe samenwerking hebben we al die hersenspinsels in een koker gestopt, waarna Kelly-Qian de montagekamer indook.
Het resultaat is een virtuoze vertelling in vier delen, waarbij de journalistieke visie niet uit het oog wordt verloren. Of zoals De Groene Amsterdammer in een recensie schrijft:
‘Wat ooit persoonlijke pijn leek, een individuele geschiedenis, bleek een verbijsterend breed gedeeld adoptiepatroon. Gestaafd door een gigantische som van getuigenissen; en onderzoek. Dat in deze nieuwe reeks niet alleen veel geadopteerden verschijnen, maar dat ook de deskundigen overwegend van kleur en zelf geadopteerd zijn, maakt het geheel nog indringender. Wie dat zwakte lijkt (niet objectief genoeg) moet vooral kijken.’
Drawn in by what felt like a contradictio in terminis — does takeout Chinese ever get delivered? — I spent a large part of 2024 and a small part of 2025 contributing to De Afhaalchinees – Thuisbezorgd, a documentary series from the mind of Kelly-Qian.
A new rollercoaster of thoughts, ideas, and positions on intercountry adoption. In close collaboration, we poured all those brainwaves into one container — after which Kelly-Qian disappeared into the editing room.
The result is a virtuosic four-part narrative that never loses sight of its journalistic lens. Or as De Groene Amsterdammer put it in a review:
‘What once seemed like personal pain — an individual story — turned out to reflect a staggeringly widespread adoption pattern. Backed by an overwhelming sum of testimonies and research. The fact that this new season features not only many adoptees, but that most of the experts are themselves people of color and adoptees too, makes it all the more powerful. If that seems like a weakness (not objective enough), all the more reason to watch.’
